My Profile

I came to Australia from England for 3 years in 1970! I had a contract as a junior lecturer at the University of NSW, but I fell in love with Sydney and Australia and stayed.

From these modest beginnings, I retired a few years ago as Head of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at that same University, where I had also been the Foundation Head of the School of Modern Language Studies.

I served as the Chair of the Language Advisory Committee of the Academic Board of the University, and was appointed the Chairman of the HSC Syllabus and Examination Committees for Spanish by the Board of Studies of NSW for a number of years.

My fields of academic study, in which I gained an international reputation, include Spanish and Latin American theatre, the plays of Federico Garcia Lorca, and the cultural politics of Cuba.

As a teacher, I taught a wide range of subjects, specializing in Spanish and Latin American literature, and in the teaching of language, including courses on translation, such as An Introduction to Translation within the School of Spanish and Latin American Studies and Communicating to the World: An Introduction to Professional Interpreting in the School of Modern Language Studies. I have worked as an interpreter on numerous occasions, normally in academic or commercial contexts.

I am highly competent in English. This is attested to by the fact that I am a member of The Times of London “Hall of Fame”, having won their Clue Challenge, an international competition in cryptic crossword clue writing, on a number of occasions. I also devise and publish cryptic crosswords, which involve using English in intricate word play with double and hidden meanings.
